Mount Fuji is the highest mountain in Japan. It is about 3,776 metres high. It is a volcano, but it is quiet now. The last big eruption was more than 300 years ago. Fuji has a very simple shape. It is almost a perfect triangle. In winter there is snow on the top. Artists paint it, people photograph it, and on a clear day you can see it from Tokyo, about 100 kilometres away. Every summer, about 200,000 people climb Mount Fuji. Many people walk in the night, or they get up early. They want to be on the top for the sunrise. It is cold up there, even in July.
