• Examiner: Let's talk about reading. Do you enjoy reading?
• Candidate (You): Absolutely - I'd consider myself something of a bookworm, actually. I tend to gravitate towards literary fiction and historical novels, though I'll occasionally pick up a biography if the subject matter resonates with me. There's something quite therapeutic about losing yourself in a well-crafted story. That said, with work commitments, I find I don't get as much time for reading as I'd like.
• Examiner: Do you think people read less these days?
• Candidate (You): Well, interestingly enough, I think the picture is more nuanced than it might appear. While traditional book reading has perhaps declined somewhat, people are actually consuming more written content than ever - just in different formats like articles, blogs, and social media. So in a sense, we're reading more, but perhaps less deeply. It's a trade-off between breadth and depth, I suppose.
• Examiner: What kind of books did you enjoy as a child?
• Candidate (You): Looking back, I was absolutely captivated by fantasy and adventure stories. I vividly remember devouring the Harry Potter series and similar books - I'd stay up well past my bedtime with a torch under the covers. What struck a chord with me was the sense of escaping into these magical worlds. In hindsight, those books really shaped my imagination and instilled a lifelong love of reading.

• Mission: answer three real Part 1 questions about YOUR life — your work or studies, your free time, your hometown — using SPICE. Success = each answer is 20-30 seconds with a signpost, one less-common word or idiom, and a mini-conclusion that shows reflection. (Tutor: ask the three questions, time each answer, and tick off the three success criteria out loud.)
• Second take: your tutor asks the most boring question they can invent — about weather, breakfast, or buses. Deliver a Band 7+ answer anyway. What did you reach for when the topic gave you nothing?
• Compare with your cooking answer from the start of the lesson. Which SPICE element changed your answers most — and which phrase from today will you keep using after the test?
