Read a 105-word news story: A Winning Image, and Questions About AI
A video showing tiny moving structures inside a child’s airway won a science imaging contest. Nikon later disqualified it, saying generative AI had been used to make the video, against the contest rules. The contest features images made with powerful microscopes, which show details too small to see with the eye. The entrant said he believed his use of AI followed the rules and worked with Nikon during its review. Some scientists questioned whether the images looked real, and Nikon examined the video and its supporting material. The company plans to look at its process again, raising questions about trust and evidence in scientific images.
