Aims

A police decision about an online message raises questions about speech, law, and public responsibility.

The lesson, stage by stage

  1. News10 min

    In the news: The story

Read a 116-word news story: Police End Review of Adviser’s Wife’s Online Message

Sarah Helm, whose husband is the UK’s national security adviser, wrote a post on X about authors who support Palestine Action. Her message came during a discussion about author Sally Rooney and her plans to give money from her books to the group. The Metropolitan Police said specialist officers carried out a review of Helm’s message. They decided it did not meet the criminal threshold, so they would take no further action against her. Palestine Action was proscribed in the UK in July 2025, meaning support for the group is a criminal offence. Rooney said she planned to donate money from her books, and her publisher said it could not sell her novels in the UK.
