    In the news: The story

Read a 146-word news story: Himalayan Growth Meets Rising Flood Risk

A new study says about 300,000 people in parts of Nepal, southeastern Tibet, and India's Uttarakhand may live in places at risk from floods and other disasters. Between 2016 and 2023, built-up land in the areas studied grew by about 45%; near lakes formed by melting glaciers, it rose by almost 78%. Tourism, roads, homes, and power projects have brought more development to river valleys. Heavy rain, melting ice, and bursting glacial lakes can send water and mud downstream, sometimes far beyond river banks. Researchers say better planning and stronger building rules could help, though moving existing homes is difficult. Officials in Nepal and Uttarakhand are setting new limits on building near some rivers, while experts say early warning systems could give people more time to act. The study does not say exactly when a disaster will happen, but it highlights important choices as communities grow.
