Aims

A huge illegal dump has been removed from an ancient woodland, but questions remain about protecting the site and helping nature return.

The lesson, stage by stage

  1. News10 min

    In the news: The story

Read a 112-word news story: The Woodland Clean-up Is Done. What Happens Next?

An illegal waste site in Hoads Wood, Kent, has been cleared after a 15-month operation. Nearly 40,000 tonnes were taken away, and the clear-up cost about £15 million, paid by the taxpayer. Criminals brought rubbish to the woodland for months in 2023. Local people and nature groups started a campaign for action, and officials have now blocked vehicle access and made a plan to respond quickly if dumping starts again. The site is an ancient woodland, and experts say some plants and wildlife may need decades to return. They also think ponds and open areas could help nature recover in new ways, although the wood may not look as it did before.
